Choosing Your Timber.

Green Oak, Douglas Fir, or Treated Spruce? Understanding the difference in cost, character, and durability.

Side-by-side comparison of structural Oak, Douglas Fir, and Spruce timber beams showing different colors and grain patterns.

Small Footprint. Massive Strength.

Don’t compromise on quality just because you need a smaller building. Our 1-Bay Garage uses the exact same 150mm x 150mm structural posts and traditional joinery as our largest complex barns. It is the ideal solution for properties with limited driveway space or for use as a secure, dry workshop.

Green Oak: The Heritage Icon.

Oak is the traditional choice for the classic British oak-frame style. We use green oak (freshly sawn timber), allowing the wood to naturally shrink and tighten around the seasoned oak pegs as it matures, securely locking the frame together.

Character: As the oak dries, it develops natural splits and gentle twists known as shakes. These are not flaws, but distinctive features that enhance the frame’s authentic, timeless character.

Maintenance: Oak contains natural tannins that help protect against rot, creating its own durability. As a result, it requires no treatment but some can be used to retain its golden colour.

Douglas Fir: The Smart Alternative.

Douglas Fir is our “Secret Weapon.” It is a premium softwood that shares many structural properties with Oak but costs significantly less.

The Look: When fresh, it has a beautiful warm red-pink tone. It has fewer knots than Oak and generally holds a straighter line with fewer cracks/shakes.

The Value: Because it grows faster and straighter than Oak, it is easier to process. This allows us to offer you a timber frame for up to 20-30% less than Oak.

Treated Spruce: The Functional Workhorse.

Spruce is a practical and cost-effective choice for functional structures such as outbuilding, stables or mono-pitch barns. While distinct from oak/douglas fir, a well-built spruce frame offers a clean, professional appearance suited to both traditional and contemporary settings.

Protection: Unlike oak or fir, spruce requires preservative treatment to resist rot. All of our spruce is high-pressure tanalised to UC4 standards for long-term durability, and each frame is supplied with the correct mounting brackets to keep timber clear of ground contact and maximise its lifespan.

Cost: Spruce provides a highly economical option for heavy structural frames, offering strength, reliability, and excellent value without compromising on performance.
